There are pieces that decorate… and then there are pieces that carry meaning.

This striking Mizpah brooch features two brilliant amethyst-tone rhinestones set within sculpted floral forms, framed by silver-tone metal and accented with dimensional green enamel leaves. Along the upper reverse, the word “MIZPAH” is stamped — a Hebrew term meaning watchtower, referencing Genesis 31:49:

“The Lord watch between me and thee, while we are absent one from another.”

Popular during eras of separation — wartime, travel, courtship — Mizpah jewelry symbolized protection, remembrance, and enduring connection. This example is a beautifully preserved mid-20th century revival of that deeply sentimental tradition.

A piece that speaks softly, but carries weight.

Detailed Description

Crafted in silver-tone cast metal, this brooch features two faceted amethyst-colored rhinestones prong-set within stylized blossoms. The stones are vibrant, machine-cut, and open-backed with warm foiled interiors that enhance their depth and glow.

The surrounding frame incorporates floral and leaf motifs with green enamel detailing along the lower foliage. The reverse bears a traditional C-clasp closure and a clear “MIZPAH” stamp with directional arrow detail.

Construction and finishing indicate mid-20th century production (c. 1940s–1960s), during a period when Victorian sentimental themes were revived in costume jewelry.

Styling Note

This brooch pairs beautifully with structured tailoring — a black blazer, wool coat, or even a crisp white blouse. It carries romantic symbolism without appearing delicate. Strong, feminine, and meaningful — very aligned with your clientele, Betty.

Collector’s Note

Mizpah jewelry first gained popularity in the late 19th century and remained meaningful well into the 20th century. While this example is a mid-century revival rather than a Victorian original, the inscription and symbolism remain authentic to the tradition.

Symbolic jewelry continues to resonate with collectors who appreciate pieces that tell a story beyond ornament.
