A magnificent and exceptionally substantial Ben Meltzer New York statement medallion pendant, featuring extraordinary dimensional metalwork and oversized faceted glass.
Dating to approximately the 1930s Art Deco era, this dramatic signed piece features an elaborate radiating design constructed from deeply folded and perforated aged brass-tone metal. The sculptural construction creates incredible dimension and texture, giving the medallion an almost architectural quality.
At the center sits an impressive faceted amber-colored glass stone, surrounded by four richly colored emerald-green faceted glass stones. An oversized ribbed bail completes the design.
The scale is exceptional. Measuring more than three inches across, this is unmistakably a statement piece—equally compelling worn on a substantial chain, cord, ribbon or torque, or displayed as part of a serious vintage costume jewelry collection.
Signed: Ben Meltzer Inc. N.Y.
Circa: 1930s
Measurements:
Pendant: approximately 3 1/4” wide × 3 1/2” tall
Center amber glass: approximately 1 1/2” tall × 1 3/4” wide
Green glass stones: each slightly over 1/2” diameter
Condition
Excellent vintage condition considering its age. The faceted glass remains remarkably beautiful and vibrant.
The reverse of the amber-colored center glass has one extremely minute flea-bite-sized indentation. It may be original to manufacture and is not a crack or scratch. It is exceptionally small and does not detract from the appearance of the piece, but it is disclosed for accuracy.
The metal retains its wonderful aged patina and surface character. It has not been represented as polished or restored, allowing the historical character of the piece to remain intact.
Pendant only. A chain, necklace, collar or torque is NOT included.
Collector’s Note
Ben Meltzer jewelry is encountered far less frequently than pieces from many of the larger American costume-jewelry houses. This example is particularly striking for its oversized scale, signed construction, enormous faceted center glass and unusual dimensional perforated metalwork.
A distinctive piece of early American costume jewelry for the collector who appreciates jewelry with age, presence and unmistakable character.
Styling Note
Let this piece command the attention. Wear it on a substantial torque, collar or chain against black, ivory, chocolate brown or emerald green for a dramatic statement.
